The Woebegone Woman (poem)

The Woebegone Woman

The woebegone woman dipped
her left toe in the bloody pool.
“As far as fun goes,” she said,
“this is pretty much the opposite.”

I didn’t argue, just smiled and jumped
in and told her the blood was fine
She gave me the evil eye and leapt,
not into the pool but into another life.
